What is diabetes?

Diabetes, also known as diabetes mellitus is a metabolic ailment characterized by high blood glucose due to lack of insulin production or because of body’s resistance to insulin.

Based on its causes, diabetes is categorized into three:

1. Type 1 diabetes – Is caused due to pancreas’ inefficiency to produce insulin. It is a non-preventable type of diabetes and is usually caused due to genetics, environment and auto-immune factors.

2. Type 2 diabetes – It’s the most common form of diabetes, usually diagnosed in adulthood. However, today many children are also falling prey to it. Obesity, erratic lifestyle and genetics are the major causes of this type of diabetes. This type of diabetes is preventable.

3. Gestational diabetes -It only occurs in women during their pregnancy and can be controlled with the right diet and exercise. However, if not controlled it can lead to Type 2 diabetes.

There is also prediabetes, a precursor to Type 2 diabetes. It has certain symptoms of diabetes but not enough to be characterized as Type 2 diabetes. Though, without proper care it can progress into full blown diabetes and also cause the several long-term damages which go with it.

Diabetes treatment

While there are several drug treatments which include oral drugs, injections, pumps etc. it is not an easy task since medicines are based on current glucose levels, especially for Type 1 diabetes. In it the glucose levels have to be self-monitored on regular basis to avoid low blood sugar episodes.

While Type 2 and Gestational diabetes treatment also involve medicines, the ideal way to treat any type of diabetes is to opt for a healthier lifestyle with a healthy diet and regular physical exercise.
