Treatments For Diabetes – Can You Prevent Type 2 Diabetes With Healthy Lifestyle Habits Alone?

type 2 diabetes No Comments »

Doctors recommend screening for type 2 diabetes among people at risk at age 30. People with a family history of diabetes and especially those who are overweight. By paying attention to specific preventable diabetes complications and adopting some healthy lifestyle habits, type 2 diabetes prevention is possible. Steps for prevention include following an easy and appropriate diet, exercising regularly and taking dietary supplements.

Some risk factors for diabetes, like family history, ethnicity or age, cannot be changed, obviously. However, some other diabetes risk factors can be changed. The basic approach to attain this is by eating a healthier diet — we are not talking about a sophisticated, complicated or super specialized one — and increasing physical activity. These simple steps may help prevent type 2 diabetes.

Moreover, if you are overweight or have high blood pressure, modifying your lifestyle may help in preventing type 2 diabetes. Your health-care provider can make specific recommendations for you, including diet changes and exercises that fit your needs. Some medications to help you lower your cholesterol and your blood pressure and at the same time quit smoking will surely reduce your risk of complications.

Scientists found that being obese or overweight is the single most important risk factor to predict who is going to develop type 2 diabetes, according to a study recently published in The New England Journal of Medicine. Study results showed, in a 16 year follow-up period, that an improved diet — low in fat and high in fiber — and a daily routine of exercise — at least 30 minutes, five days per week — can significantly help with type 2 diabetes prevention.

Bottom line: type 2 diabetes prevention is just as easy as adopting healthy lifestyle habits.

To state the need for a dietary supplement, as I did above, could sound as an exaggeration or overstatement, but it is not. Our normal diet hardly comply with our needs concerning nutrients for our health. Besides that, herbal supplements, vitamins and minerals, if wisely taken are mostly safe, with no side effects, and very affordable as well. But that is not all … these dietary supplements can not only help you prevent diabetes. They can also reverse onset type 2 diabetes by stimulating your pancreatic function and lowering your insulin resistance.

A scientific team — the Finnish Diabetes Prevention Study Group — stated that with weight loss and improved physical activity level, people at high risk of type 2 diabetes could reduce their risk by more than 50%. This study was performed in more than 500 overweight people than also had pre-diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance.

There are some scientific studies that show that several diabetes medications, along with healthy eating and exercising habits, can dramatically reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Pharmaceutical laboratories will not, obviously, accept the fact that the all-natural remedies are much better, safer and cheaper. The herbal, mineral and vitamin supplements can help not only prevent the progression to type 2 diabetes in people with impaired glucose tolerance, but also control and reverse diabetes once you have it.

The Diabetes Prevention Program showed that people with high risk for developing type 2 diabetes (pre-diabetes, or borderline diabetes) could significantly reduce that risk when using some prescription drugs, along with diet and lifestyle changes. This is important, but the above study also showed that the risk of diabetes could be reduced much further through intensive lifestyle changes alone (exercise and nutrition).

So the question is: why take drugs when you can improve your condition by adopting healthy lifestyle habits alone? Or at least when you can take herbal, mineral and vitamin supplements, and attain even diabetes reversal?

What’s the Difference Between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes?

diabetes No Comments »

Diabetes affects millions of Americans today, but it can take different forms. You may often hear of someone saying that they have “Type 1 diabetes” or “Type 2 diabetes”. But what is the difference between the two types? Isn’t it all just diabetes?

The answer is yes and no. While both are forms of diabetes, each type has its own distinct characteristics. This means that treatment differs between the two.

Between five and ten percent of all diabetes sufferers have Type 1 diabetes. You may also hear people refer to this type as “juvenile-onset diabetes” or “insulin-dependent diabetes”. In this case, the body’s immune system attacks the cells that release insulin into your body. The immune system destroys these cells, and because of this, insulin production in the body is eliminated. Insulin aids the glucose (sugar) absorption into the blood, so if your body has no insulin, it cannot absorb sugar. Without this process, your body cannot produce energy. Generally speaking, people develop symptoms of Type 1 diabetes during their childhood or young adulthood. They suddenly become seriously ill as a result of sudden symptoms of high blood sugar. Type 1 sufferers are also prone to periods of low blood sugar, called “hypoglycemia”. Type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented – you are either born with it or you are not.

Type 2 diabetes is the more common ailment of the two – roughly ninety to ninety-five percent of all diabetes sufferers are afflicted with Type 2 diabetes.. This form of diabetes is also called “adult-onset diabetes” or “non-insulin-dependent diabetes”. In this case, the body resists the insulin it produces. It cannot properly respond to the insulin in the body. As you can expect, this also has serious adverse effects on your health. This resistance can be the result of increasing age, obesity, a genetic predisposition, or other factors. People can develop Type 2 diabetes at any age – it generally begins showing itself in adulthood, but there is an increasing number of children who are developing symptoms of Type 2 diabetes today. While certain diabetes medicines and treatments can result in a low blood sugar level, there are no episodes of hypoglycemia that occur naturally in a Type 2 diabetes sufferer. The good news is that Type 2 diabetes is preventable through a healthy lifestyle – eating sensibly and exercising regularly.

Both types of diabetes can greatly increase your risk of developing serious, life-threatening complications. Continuous monitoring and management of the disease can prevent most serious complications, but kidney failure and blindness can still develop for a diabetes sufferer. It also can cause heart disease, stroke, and amputations of the leg and foot.

The best thing you can do to prevent these complications is regular check-ups and examinations with your doctor. As long as you catch your diabetes early, you can diagnose and manage the complications, resulting in your ability to live a full, healthy life.

Can You Reverse Type 2 Diabetes?

type 2 diabetes No Comments »

Is it possible to reverse type 2 diabetes? This is a question that many people ask, but few people know the answer to. The standard medical design for addressing diabetes is geared towards slowing down the development of the disease, but little effort is put into reversing type 2 diabetes.

If we look back through history we have to remember that we once thought that the earth was flat, and that it was impossible to fly. Individuals with diabetes are generally placed into the traditional model of treatment and many gradually get worse. As time goes on medications typically increase, and each of these medications brings unwanted side effects.

The financial burden of this standard treatment can also be overwhelming. Economists have predicted that diabetes could by itself bankrupt our health care system. Is there no additional way to handle type 2 diabetes? Or is it more profitable to keep doing what we are currently doing to treat this disease?

If it is possible to reverse type 2 diabetes what might that mean? It would mean a significant loss of money to the prescription drug companies, along with a tremendous financial loss to our current medical model. It is very profitable to medicate people who have diabetes indefinitely. It is also profitable to treat the long term effects of this disease when they arrive. Why would the people making money from this disease have any interest in concentrating on treatments other than medication? We have a very good medical care system in the United States that is driven by profit, and occasionally that can mean that the patient get what they need. Profit is king, and in the world of diabetes this can be a real problem.

For decades our medical system has been following an approach that obviously has not had the type of results that most people are looking for. After being diagnosed patients are instructed to lose weight, exercise, eat better and to take medications. This seems like great advice and three to six months later patients are scheduled to come back for another checkup.

The reality is that diabetes is a syndrome of multiple organ systems. In order to begin reversing type 2 diabetes it is critical to test each of these areas to asses function. The clinics doing this type of in-depth testing are achieving results that were thought to be impossible just a few years ago.

By finding the cause of the disease instead of the symptoms, doctors are able to begin supporting organ areas that need assistance. As proper function returns to the body, blood sugar levels also begin to normalize.

The answers are out there. Don’t be satisfied with the status quo.

Below is a list of a few vitamins that can help with Type 2 Diabetes:

Alpha-lipoic acid

Alpha lipoic acid boosts glucose intake into cells in Type 2 Diabetes, and slows down the biochemical process of irregular ‘addition’ of sugar molecules to protein molecules in the body (which can cause damage to various parts of the body); as well as reducing diabetic nerve damage and decrease the pain, related with nerve damage.

Chromium is an indispensable mineral that plays a major role in fat and carbohydrate metabolism, in addition to facilitating the body’s cells to react properly to insulin.

Magnesium assists in adjusting blood sugar levels and is required for proper nerve and muscle functioning, immune function, heart rhythm, and blood pressure. Low levels of magnesium aggravate blood sugar control in Diabetes 2. Therefore including wholegrains, seeds, nuts, and green leafy vegetables in your diet that are natural sources of magnesium, is a must.

Zinc plays a major part in the manufacture and storage of insulin. Foods rich in zinc include egg yolks, chicken, lamb, fresh oysters, beef liver, buckwheat, pecans, sardines, ginger root, lima beans, split peas, walnuts and almonds.

Brewer’s yeast

Brewer’s yeast is an great resource for chromium; it is also believed to be helpful in treating high levels of blood sugar or blood glucose. It assists the body by reducing the quantity of insulin required by the body.

Can a Type 2 Diabetes Diet Really Work?

type 2 diabetes No Comments »

The general perception is that the ill health effects of Type 2 Diabetes cannot be cured with the help of dietary changes alone. To an extent this is right, but not always, and not in every case. This is because following an altered diet may not help in controlling the underlying diabetes, if the original diet followed was not the root cause of the diabetes in the first place. The root cause may have been for example, a lack of physical activity, chronic stress, or both.

Diet adjustments are made so as to ‘remove or lower’ the excessive glucose or sugar load from the bloodstream. Though this should be the first step that any person diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes needs to follow, such adjustments in the diet alone are not always capable of curing one from the ill effects of Diabetes 2.

Regarding the diet, Type 2 diabetes is also partly caused by the lack of ‘good’ fats and an excess of ‘poor’ quality fats in our diets. Besides contributing to the onset of Type 2 Diabetes, these ‘bad’ fats can additionally cause other problems such as heart disease, obesity and a few more other dreaded health related conditions.

Diet alterations can be used to control and cure one from the ill effects of Diabetes 2, if done intelligently. So, one needs to understand various parameters in order to ‘implement and design’ a favorable diet routine that can cure one from the ill effects of Diabetes 2.

PCF ratio is one of these important parameters. PCF stands for protein, carbohydrates and fats. Proper ratios of PCF consist of 20% protein, 30% fats (good fat) and 50% of carbohydrates.

One can consume these proteins from fish, chicken, eggs and nuts, etc, but at the same time, one should also adjust the intake of these things in a very controlled, and limited manner. That means, watch your portion size! Note that in individuals with advanced kidney disease, an excessive intake of protein can lead to further kidney failure, which could be a major problem in some diabetic patients.

Carbohydrates may be taken from many sources, including fruits, vegetables and wholegrains. Those with Type 2 diabetes should ensure that the carbohydrate they are taking in, should be one with a low Glycaemic Index (low GI) value.

Fats come in several types, and the more monounsaturated fat is, the better it will be for you. Fats can be taken in from Oleic sunflower oil, olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil.

The one particular fat which is essential for the healthy functioning of the body is a fat commonly referred to as an ‘omega 3 fatty acid’. These are found in oily fish like salmon, and also found in flaxseed which is also known as linseed (which should be ground before consuming, otherwise it cannot be absorbed from the intestines). The ‘saturated’ fats are the worst for your health, and are absolutely not good for diabetic patients. Finally, one should also aim to consume fiber in copious amounts, as this will help to slow digestion. Slowing digestion also means blood sugar levels will rise more slowly (rather than rising rapidly to high and dangerous levels). Keeping blood sugar levels as low as possible is the ultimate goal of all diabetics. Fibre included in your diet is also thought to help you reduce the risk of obesity, as it is considered to help you feel fuller for longer and help you eat less. An intelligent diet plan can not only help you control, but also help cure you from the ill effects of Type 2 diabetes!

Explanation Of The Difference Between Type 1 And Type 2 Diabetes Diagnoses

type 2 diabetes No Comments »

Diabetes is a disease that causes impairment of the pancreas in creating insulin. Most individuals know about Diabetes, but are not familiar with the two types of the condition. The difference between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes is not very well known.

Most people who suffered from Diabetes, before 1922, died of Diabetic complications. At that time, Charles Best and Sir Frederick Grant Banting discovered insulin and realized its importance in treating Diabetes. The pair of researchers could have become extremely wealthy if they had patented the insulin, but they decided instead to keep the costs down for those who needed it to save their lives. Because of their altruism, many diabetic individuals were able to extend their lives, when otherwise, their life expectancy would be much more limited.

Type 1 Diabetes causes an ability to make insulin, a hormone that manages glucose. When insulin is not present in the body the sugar is not made available to the cells of the organs, and there is damage as a result.

Some of the factors involved in Type 1 Diabetes, according to research, are the environment, the immune system, and in some cases, genetics. Examples of environmental effects are viruses. Other possibilities are autoimmune conditions which cause the body to turn against itself. In the case of Diabetes, the pancreas is attacked, and the result is impaired ability to distribute sugar effectively. Usually, this type of Diabetes is diagnoses before age 35.

Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes are: frequent urination, increased bed wetting, chronic tiredness, unexplained weight loss, excessive thirst, and excessive hunger.

In order to sustain and nourish bodily organs in Type 1 Diabetes, injections of insulin assist in moving sugar to them from the bloodstream.

As the first type of Diabetes, Type 2 is indicated by abnormality in the pancreas. Diabetes Mellitus is another name for the condition. In this type of Diabetes, insulin is manufactured, but is not able to move the sugar to the cells of organs. The result is high blood sugar, a dangerous condition. The normal onset of Type 2 Diabetes is in adulthood, but an alarming trend is the diagnosis of the condition in youth.

Symptoms of Diabetes Mellitus are obesity, family history of the condition, and sedentary lifestyle. Type 2 shares some characteristics of Type 1, but has added symptoms such as Acanthosis Nigricans, which are permanently dark, thick skin folds in the neck area. Vaginitis and infections on the skin and urinary tract are other associated conditions.

Treatment of the disease involves changes in diet, exercise, and medication, but not necessarily insulin injection. Only when other interventions are not effective is insulin prescribed. Even with effective intervention, Diabetes can not be cured. If left untreated, it can result in heart disease, kidney failure, impotence, blindness, and coma.

Diabetes, although not curable, is treatable. When there is an absence of insulin produced by the pancreas, or when the insulin is ineffective at moving the glucose from the bloodstream to the organs. Those two conditions describe the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. If not monitored and treated, they can cause serious illness and even death. However, thanks to the discovery of insulin by two altruistic scientists, people can lead normal lives with only slight modifications.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, then you need a blood sugar levels chart . The blood sugar chart can be found on our website and it is easy to read and understand.
